For several years, the Board of Directors of the South Gilliam Health District and the staff of the South Gilliam County Health Center have been assessing the needs of our Gilliam County communities and identifying gaps in public health services available to our rural county.

The idea of conducting a feasibility study and researching exactly what public health offers has also been discussed for a number of years, until the spring of 2021 when the Gilliam County Court approved the funding to pilot a feasibility study. For 9 months, this feasibility study focused on researching what exactly public health is, what programs are offered, state laws and rules, and more importantly- if Gilliam County had the capacity to take control of its own county’s public health needs.

In the final months of 2021, the Gilliam County Court reviewed the feasibility study and approved the proposal to withdraw from our current public health provider and begin the process of starting our own local Gilliam County Public Health Department.

The Gilliam County Court has contracted with the South Gilliam Health District to work with the state in developing our Local Public Health Department and to provide public health services to ALL Gilliam County citizens.
